The 41st Flower Count kicks off tomorrow, March 3, and runs until March 9!

The Flower Count is an annual fun promotion sponsored and organized by The Butchart Gardens and Tourism Victoria.

The goal is to increase pride of residents and also bring awareness to the fact that we are a great destination to visit in the shoulder season:

It brings attention to the fact that Victoria has the mildest climate in Canada. While the rest of Northern America is still in the grips of winter weather, Victoria often enjoys spring temperatures of 10-15° Celsius!

Not sure just how many blooms there are in your large heather bush or small cherry tree? Well, there is a formula for that:

How to count

  • Small tree full of blossoms =  250,000 blossoms
  • Medium tree full of blossoms =  500,000 blossoms
  • Large tree full of blossoms = 750,000 blossoms
  • Small Heather bush = 500 blossoms
  • Medium Heather bush = 1,000 blossoms
  • Large Heather bush = 2,000 blossoms

The results are then reported to Flower Count Headquarters at www.flowercount.ca.

Don’t forget to also post your pics counting the blooms with the hashtag #Flowercount. Each flower you count puts your area closer to winning Bloomingest Community.

In 1976, over 130 million blooms were counted. In 2015 just over 17 billion blooms were tallied, but so far 2010 is the reigning best bloomin’ year with 21 billion flowers counted!
