New skatepark approved for Sidney at Tulista Park

Skateboarders in Sidney will soon have new a place to call their own after the approval of a state-of-the-art skateboard park to be located at Tulista Park.

Cheers broke out from a young, energetic audience at last night’s council meeting when Sidney Council approved the construction of the new park.

The town began discussing a new location last March as it explored the option of removing the current skatepark near Mary Winspear Centre to build an employee/overflow parking lot.

“The initial community consultation process was a positive indication of the skate community’s support for a new park and their willingness to be a part of the process. The meeting was well attended and input was tremendous,” read a released statement.

Sidney hired New Line Skateparks, the same company that designed the 24,000 square foot skatepark in Vic West, to consult and design the new skatepark destined for Tulista Park.

The location was chosen as the preferred spot based on its convenient access to bus service, parking and washrooms.

The Town has budgeted $150,000 in both their 2016 and 2017 financial plans to pay for construction of the skate park, and they’re seeking out additional grants.
Construction is expected to begin in February of 2017, with the park slated to open in June of 2017.
