A study has been initiated to create a 30-year vision and plan for the Uptown – Douglas Corridor (UDC) area and Saanich wants your input.
Stretching from the City of Victoria border at the south end, to just north of the Saanich Municipal Hall, the study area represents a critical regional hub that is experiencing significant growth and change.
Quick Facts:
- 21% of all jobs in Saanich are in the Uptown-Douglas Corridor study area.
- 130,000 vehicles travel through this corridor every day.
- Population in this area has grown by 1.7% annually over the past 5 years, roughly double the rate of Saanich and the Capital Regional District.
- 30% of Saanich’s industrial land is located in Uptown-Douglas Corridor study area.
- Douglas Street is identified as a rapid transit corridor and Uptown Centre has been identified as a transit hub in the BC Transit – Transit Future Plan.
The Baseline Conditions Report highlights several key aspects and current conditions in the UDC Study Area. The report is intended to assist community discussions on the various planning issues and opportunities that will be addressed during the development of the UDC.

The municipality is planning for future rapid transit on Douglas Street, as well as creating a more attractive walkable urban environment. Providing opportunities for more residents and job creation are also some of the key topics that will be explored in the process.
Public engagement for Phase 2 of the UDC Plan will occur May 26 to June 24, including:
- Coffee Klatches: Discussions at local coffee shops
- A living room at Uptown Shopping Centre
- Lemonade stand on the Galloping Goose Trail
- Weekly online polls
- Displays at the public library – Emily Carr and Centennial branches
