Nanaimo man charged with manslaughter one year after death ruled homicide

Police have arrested and charged Colin Lamontagne, a 40-year-old Nanaimo man, with manslaughter in the death of 34-year-old Shaun Alexander McGregor.

The charge comes one year to the day that investigator’s announced the death was a homicide. Lamontagne and a woman were taken into custody on Friday. The woman has since been released without charges.

Shortly after 7:30 pm on April 9th 2015,  police were called to Fernwood Manor Apartments on Begbie Street. Sources at the time told the Times Colonist several intoxicated people were in the suite that night when an altercation broke out.

A person in the suite called police, but when officers arrived, they found just McGregor, who was unresponsive. The coroner pronounced McGregor dead at the scene.

The death suspicious at the time. An autopsy was able to determine his death was a homicide.

McGregor had just been released from Wilkinson Road Jail.

According to website Breaking the Code, Lamontagne is a well known as a meth dealer in Nanaimo and Duncan area.
