Investigators say it now appears a Sidney man who died this morning suffered his injuries after becoming disoriented, falling down, and hitting his head.

Sidney/North Saanich RCMP said there is no evidence to suggest foul play or that a vehicle was involved.

“The man may have been suffering from early signs of cognitive/memory impairment and this may have been a contributing factor to this incident,” Cpl. Erin Fraser said in a statement.

Around 4 a.m., a newspaper delivery person found the 79-year-old man lying on the roadway in the 8000-block of Lochside Drive near Cy Hampson Park in North Saanich.

Cpl. Erin Fraser of the RCMP detachment says there is indication the victim may have been suffering from early-onset dementia or Alzheimer’s.

“It is unknown what happened to cause the male’s injuries and at this time it is not believed he was hit by a vehicle,” Cpl. Erin Fraser said.

Family had seen him last night walking in Sidney. They thought he had gone back home to go to bed, but discovered this morning he had not returned.

He is described as an Asian man with salt and pepper hair, who stood around 5-foot-6 and had a slight build. He was wearing glasses, a beige-coloured jacket, blue jeans, a green vest, and black shoes.

Investigators are still on site as they try to determine how the elderly man came to be lying injured in the roadway. Lochside Drive between Amity and McTavish streets has been reopened after being closed for hours as police investigated.

Police will be releasing the man’s photo on Wednesday, with hopes someone will recognize seeing the man prior to the incident.

Police are asking anyone with information about what happened to the man to contact them at 250-656-3931.
