Coroner identifies drowning victims on Salt Spring Island

The BC Coroners Service has released the names of two men who died following a swimming incident on Saltspring Island.

Masashi Shintani and Ryo Yamaguchi were both 25, and originally from Japan. Shintani had been living in Vancouver and Yamaguchi in the Victoria area.

The two men died while swimming in Weston Lake near Ruckle Provincial Park with a third person on Aug. 16. According to the coroner, their companion reached a wharf in the lake but the other two did not.

They were transported to Lady Minto Hospital in Ganges, but were not able to be resuscitated.

The deaths are still being investigated by both the coroner and RCMP.
