First ever CIS football game played on Vancouver Island: UBC Thunderbirds vs Manitoba Bison

Share

The UBC Thunderbirds and Manitoba Bison will kick off their 2016 season in an exhibition game at Westhills Stadium in Langford.

The game will be the first ever CIS football game played on Vancouver Island.

All proceeds from the game will go to support Greater Victoria Minor Football, Westshore Rebels and the UBC Football Island Scholarship Fund.

“It’s kind of hard to imagine how exciting it will be right now,” says UBC Thunderbirds running back Marcus Davis, who played his high-school football in Victoria. “I think when the fans start filling into the stadium it will be a huge event for Vancouver Island.”

“It’s a great initiative and something we’d like to do often,” says UBC Football Head Coach Blake Nill. “A lot of good players come out of that area. I’d like to see the day where I’m recruiting four to five every year.”

These two teams will have developed a healthy dislike for one another by now. The Thunderbirds and Bisons met three times during the 2015 season, with UBC winning all three games. The scores became more lopsided as the season wore on. (51-48, 24-10, 52-10)
