A man in his late sixties, believed to have been impaired, is lucky to be alive after crashing his car on Monday evening – the vehicle he was operating struck a fire hydrant and filled with water.

Sidney / North Saanich RCMP were investigating a hit and run, where a woman reported her vehicle had been hit by a passing car and sustained minor damage.

As police were looking for the suspect, they received a call reporting a single-vehicle collision nearby on John Road between the Patricia Bay Highway and Wilson Road at around 5:30 p.m.

A green Nissan Sentra, had spun out of control before it landed on its side striking a fire hydrant. The driver was trapped as water quickly filled the car up to the man’s chest.

North Saanich firefighters arrived on scene and used the jaws of life to remove the roof and extract the driver.

He suffered unknown injuries and was transported to hospital for medical assessment.
RCMP continue to investigate.
