A B.C. Coroners investigation has determined a woman who was found dead after she was struck by a vehicle in Central Saanich in February, actually died prior to the crash.

The incident happened on Mount Newton Cross Road, between Pat Bay Highway and Central Saanich Road.

Suzanne Cameron Gillespie, 47, of Saanichton, was pronounced dead after being struck by an SUV while she was lying on the road in the 2300-block of Mount Newton Cross Road on the night of Feb. 12.

An investigation by the B.C. Coroners Service, Central Saanich Police Service and Saanich Police Traffic Services determined that Gillespie had in fact died before she was struck by the vehicle, according to the BC Coroners Service, in a media release.

Post-mortem testing showed unequivocally that she had suffered a sudden cardiac event as a result of severe heart disease prior to sustaining the injuries incurred in the motor vehicle incident,” said spokesperson Barb McLintock.

The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and was cooperative with the investigation. He was not charged.
