Witnesses sought following downtown assault and serious crash

Share

Police have arrested a man and a woman after they assaulted a man outside the Peacocks Billiards on Douglas Street Thursday night and then sped off, causing a serious crash moments later.

First responders were called to the pool hall at the corner of View and Douglas streets just after 11 p.m. after a man walked into the courtyard of the establishment asking for help stating he was pepper-sprayed.

While officers were interviewing the victim and canvassed for witnesses, other officers saw two people running from the area and circled around in an attempt to track them down.

As they were searching the area, police spotted a car without its lights on speed out of a parking lot in the 1700-block of Store Street.

The fleeing vehicle didn’t get far before it slammed into another vehicle at the intersection of Pembroke and Government streets.

The man and woman inside the car, who also tried to flee the scene of the crash, resembled the pair seen running from the site of the earlier assault and were arrested.

The occupants of the vehicle that was hit were uninjured.

Police believe the victim of the assault and assailants were known to each other.
