Oak Bay council approves 4-storey Bowker condo

A contentious mixed-used condominium project development being proposed by Abstract Developments is going ahead in Oak Bay.

By a vote of 4-3,  Oak Bay Council gave the green light on Monday for the development of a 43-unit building at the corner of Bowker Avenue and Cadboro Bay Road.

The final decision followed a seven-hour long public hearing in Oak Bay last week.

Oak Bay’s Mayor told CHEK News, the fact that the building includes commercial space on the main road and that it would be flanked by two other four-storey buildings swayed him.

Developer, Mike Miller told the Times Colonist last year, the corner of the building will be a landscaped neighbourhood gathering place, hopefully with a café or restaurant.

The commercial space would be set back under upper levels to provide protection from weather and develop more pedestrian space on the sidewalk on Cadboro Bay.

Construction is expected to get underway by late 2017 or early 2018.
