136 people died from illicit drug overdoses in April

Drug overdoses in B.C. claimed the lives of 136 people in April, which is almost double April 2016’s total of 69 deaths.

That brings the yearly total to 488 lives lost.

The number of fatalities for the month increased by more than 10% over March. April is now the second deadliest month for overdoses, second only to December 2016 when 144 people died.

The top three townships where fatal illicit drug overdoses occurred were Vancouver, Surrey, and Victoria.

Victoria had 37 overdose fatalities.
