5 reasons to check out Fernfest on June 16-17

Share

The 22nd annual FernFest is happening this weekend. This free event invites people of all ages to explore the sights and sounds of Fernwood and beyond.

The event spans over two days at the Fernwood Square on June 16th and 17th. Here are 5 reasons why you should check it out:

5 – Pancake Breakfast by Donation

What better way to start off your weekend than with name-your-own-price pancakes from the Fernwood Inn. Get to Fernfest bright and early on Saturday for your 9:00 am helping of flapjacks.

4 – Artisan Market

After you’ve filled your belly, explore the work of dozens of Victoria-based creators at the Artisan Market, including unique products such as beer soap, upcycled clothing, and local art.

3 – Field of Dreams

For any younger Fernfest attendees, Vic High field will host plenty of kids activities. Children can take part in face-painting, giant games, help create an interactive community art project, or play on a giant cardboard castle.

2 – Bike Parade & Walking Tours

Starting at 10:00 am on Saturday, decorations and a bike mechanic will be available for the 11:00 am kids bike ride.

If you’re looking for something a little slower-paced, join one of the Victoria Heritage Foundation’s Walking Tours (11:00 am and 1:00 pm on Saturday). Also, at 1:00 pm & 3:00 pm, you can explore the medicinal and edible plants of Spring Ridge Commons.

1 – Performers

A who’s who of Victoria’s top musical talent will be on display this year. On Friday, the music starts at 5:00 pm and continues through until 10:00 pm. Must-sees on Friday evening include Stel and Electric Sex Panther. The latter is comprised of brothers Gaelan and Kiaran McMillan, Brennan Doyle, Julian Mulhall, Lucas Bell, and Quinn Bates. You might recognize their energetic brand of Funk/RnB/Hi Hop/Soul from their phenomenal weekly gigs at Canoe Club.

Saturday’s performance options are even more diverse. At the Kidz Stage from 11:30 am to 3:00 pm, youngsters can enjoy storytelling, hoop-making, yoga, and songs. Main stage artists on Saturday start at noon with Funk Cannon and play through the afternoon, culminating around 8:00 pm with performance art from Made in Alchemy followed by a headline act from BUČAN BUČAN.
