Air Canada named Best Airline in North America

Canada’s largest airline won big at the “Oscars of the airline industry” on Tuesday.

At the Skytrax World Airline Awards, Air Canada picked up the title of the Best Airline in North America.

As the sixth award for Air Canada in eight years, the win isn’t a huge surprise. However, being the top pick in Skytrax’s survey of 20 million travellers still gives the airline bragging rights.

“We are delighted to be recognized as the Best Airline in North America by Skytrax based on the opinions of those who know us best: our customers,” said Calin Rovinescu, President and Chief Executive of Air Canada. “I thank our employees for their hard work and dedication in helping us earn this distinction and I thank our customers for their loyalty and support as we have expanded our reach across the globe.”

Movement in the world rankings

Air Canada also moved up in the World Airline Rankings, going from 31st in 2016 to 29th in 2017. According to those rankings, Delta Airlines were their closest North American competitors, coming three spots behind at 32nd.

Fellow Canadian airline Westjet shifted down the rankings this year, falling from 50th in 2016 to 58th in 2017.
