Esquimalt hotel to be converted into rental housing

Esquimalt Town Council has approved a proposal to convert the Econolodge Inn & Suites into pet-friendly rental housing.

GMC Projects has taken on the development, which will see the location overhauled.

The development plans to turn the hotel’s 120 rooms into 96 units of rental housing including a pet-friendly studio, one and two-bedroom apartments, 5 waterfront two-bedroom units, and one four-bedroom apartment.

GMC’s past projects include the Quadra Villa Apartments as well as two properties downtown: the Westholme Block and 546 Yates Street.

Residential and Commercial Aspects

For the Econolodge, GMC’s website currently lacks information apart from the area’s new title of “Portage West”.

But according to Citified, the development plans aren’t just limited to housing. GMC are also said to be aiming to “transform” the former hotel into a “waterfront community”.

Additions include a pool overlooking the Gorge Waterway, a communal kitchen, a clubhouse with a yoga studio, and either a coffee shop or restaurant.

Completion of the new development will likely occur in late 2018 or early 2019.
