Beloved Saanich homeless man to be honoured with memorial bench

After months of fundraising, members of the Saanich community have organized the installation of a permanent memorial to Peter Verin, a local homeless man who passed away on January 9.

Verin, a “mythical figure” in the Saanich and University of Victoria area, touched the lives of countless community members.

Living in the area the 1970s, Verin developed a reputation for engaging students and professors in deep philosophical discussions.

Shortly after his passing, community members created a temporary memorial at a bus stop near the intersection of Quadra and Mackenzie. However, the new memorial bench is will be located the Lochside Regional Trail at Quadra and Greenridge.

The memorial bench’s unveiling and an accompanying celebration of life are scheduled for 2:00 pm on Sunday, June 11th.

A basket will be passed around for donations with any excess funds contributed to local homeless charities.
