Vancouver Island and Gulf Islands voted top two “Best Islands in Canada”

Love island life on the west coast? So do we, and so do the readers of Travel & Leisure Magazine.

They voted our home the #1 island in all of Canada!

“Vancouver Island is paradise for adventure- and culture-focused travellers,” wrote Rebecca Ascher-Walsh. “[the island features] the province’s thriving capital, Victoria, and pristine wilderness that feels frozen in time.”

The ranking comes courtesy of a reader survey for the magazine’s World’s Best Awards.

“The combination of the mountains, electric-blue water, wild animals, First Nations culture, untrammeled wilderness, and centuries-old trees makes for a phenomenal retreat from the world,” wrote one reader. “The locals are super-friendly, too.”

But Vancouver Island wasn’t the only west coast destination on the list. Our Georgia Strait neighbours earned second place!

“The Gulf Islands may lack beaches and water warm enough for swimming, but they are ideal for those who are less about tanning, and more about hiking, biking, and kayaking,” wrote Ascher-Walsh.

2017 marks the first year that the Gulf Islands made the list.

Cape Breton took third place.
