The fiery boat at Fisherman’s Wharf belonged to a U.S couple who narrowly escaped

Share

Yesterday, a boat at Fisherman’s Wharf added a streak of black smoke to the haze already hovering over Victoria. Just before noon on Wednesday, a 32-foot Bayliner refuelling at Victoria Marine Fuels caught fire.

Robert and Kelly Frasure, a couple from Tacoma, Washington, heard only a loud boom. They then escaped their boat along with their dog Bella, while their friend Steve Carey attempted to combat the flames with a fire extinguisher.

However, the fire only continued to grow. Bystanders pushed the boat away from the fuelling station to prevent an explosion, and firefighters arrived soon after.

Half an Hour to Extinguish

The boat drifted out onto the Songhees waterway and slowly sank. In the end, it took half an hour for authorities to extinguish the blaze. C-Tow then recovered the underwater vessel.

Robert and Kelly lost personal possessions but were unharmed and have insurance.

The Victoria Fire Department continues to investigate the cause of the fire, but initial reports indicate an electrical malfunction ignited the flames.
