Victoria city council passes motion pushing for a B.C. Disabilities Act

Only three Canadian provinces – Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Manitoba – have passed laws guaranteeing accessibility for people with disabilities in provincially-regulated areas, but Victoria wants B.C. to become the fourth.

Victoria City Council recently passed a motion pushing the provincial government to implement a B.C. Disabilities Act.

Over 600,000 British Columbians live with a disability. For them, daily activities can have unique difficulties. Legislation such as a B.C. Disabilities Act would make city streets, parks, playgrounds, public transportation and workplaces much easier to navigate.

“Actions Not Being Taken”

The motion was brought forward by City of Victoria Councillor Jeremy Loveday. “The province has accessibility goals but without a law the actions are not being taken,” he told CHEK News.

“We want to make sure that we’re not creating new barriers when it comes to things like infrastructure.”
