Hundreds of Victorians participated in the worldwide Women’s March 2018 (PHOTOS)

Yesterday afternoon, over 1,300 women, men, children, and puppies took to the streets to celebrate the progress of women’s rights, and discuss how to further achieve equality for women in all aspects of society.

The Women’s March in Victoria was just one part of hundreds of marches taking place around the world on Saturday – a year after the initial women’s marches in 2017 that was prompted by President Donald Trump’s inauguration.

Our city’s chapter of the event put a spotlight on women from grassroots activism organizations, rather than focusing on what politicians and public figures have to say.

So although public figures like Lisa Helps and Elizabeth May were present in Centennial Square, they were simply introducing the main speakers of the event.

A range of topics

Speakers like Meagan Pal (UVic Women in Engineering and Computer Science), Keri Greenridge (Victoria Immigrant and Refugee Centre), Zainab Bint Younus (Muslim women’s representation), and Carla Voyageur (Tsastilqualus Nation) brought a wide variety of topics to people’s attention, and no stone was left un-turned.

From sexual assault to racism to birth control – issues that affect women (and pretty much everyone in society) were discussed at great length, before the march commenced.

We, at Victoria Buzz, were covering the event live and got some great photos that captured the energy and powerful atmosphere at the procession.

Check out what people had to say:
