The Johnson Street Bridge will be closed for most of the weekend

Share

This weekend could be one of the last times the old Johnson Street Bridge will close for an extended period (knock on wood).

This Saturday and Sunday, the “Dynamic Beast” crane barge will return to Victoria to install the final components of the new bridge.

Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps told the Times Colonist that this is the last major closure needed to facilitate construction.

Schedule:

On Saturday, January 27, the massive crane barge will lift and place the 46-metre long bridge deck span. The span includes the three vehicle travel lanes, two on-street bike lanes, a pedestrian walkway and a multi-use pathway that connects with the Galloping Goose and E&N Trails.

On Sunday, January 28, the Dynamic Beast will lift the steel roadway infill panel into place. The panel sits between the main bridge deck span and the rings, completing the entire bridge deck.

Closures:

Severe weather could cause the construction to be delayed, but the bridge is currently scheduled to close from 7:00 am Saturday, January 27 to 5:00 pm, Sunday, January 28.

The crane barge will be parked directly underneath the existing bridge which will remain in the up position until all pieces are placed. Areas near the approaches to the bridge will also be closed to ensure public safety.

During the closure, pedestrians, cyclists and drivers will be detoured to the Bay Street Bridge.

Ferry Service Available for $2

Victoria Harbour Ferry will provide ferry services during the closure between the Delta Hotel, Regent Hotel and causeway docks. The ferries will operate from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The fare is $2 per person for a one-way trip.

The best view of the construction activities will be from the northeast side of the bridge near Canoe Club and Mermaid Wharf or online on the project webcam.

While the new bridge will look complete, it is not expected to be open to the public until the end of March to allow for tests of the mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems.
