Driver in fatal crash on Gorge Road won’t face any charges

Saanich Police have determined that a driver who hit a pedestrian in October will not be charged because of a “medical event” that occurred, which caused the collision.

On Wednesday, October 18, 2017 just after 11:30 am Saanich Police responded to a crash near the intersection of Gorge Rd West/Donald St.

A Chevrolet Suburban was travelling east on Gorge Rd W when it went off the road, mounted the sidewalk and stuck a pedestrian – Khushal Rana – who had just left his son’t 4th birthday party.

On the evening of October 21, 2017, Rana passed away while in the Intensive Care Unit at the Victoria General Hospital.

Rana’s employer – the Sizzling Tandoor restaurant – set up a GoFundMe to help Rana’s family. The campaign raised over $128,000 for his wife and children.

Investigation Details:

The Saanich Police Traffic Safety Unit spoke with a number of people throughout the course of the investigation including the 25-year-old driver, witnesses, emergency services personnel, and hospital staff.

The Saanich Police Crash Analyst Team collected evidence from both the scene and from the vehicle. Investigators also obtained medical documents in relation to the driver.

All evidence led the investigators to believe the driver suffered a medical event while driving. During this event the driver lost control of her vehicle, mounted the sidewalk and struck Rana.

As the driver suffered a medical issue she will not be charged with any infractions under the Motor Vehicle Act or Criminal Code.

Investigators did complete a request for review of medical fitness to drive and submitted this to the Office of the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles. Again, our thoughts and condolences go out to the Rana family.
