Three 4.0+ magnitude earthquakes strike off the coast of Port Hardy

Share

Today was a pretty shaky Sunday for ocean dwellers near northern Vancouver Island.

The epicentre of the three consecutive earthquakes were located about 159 kilometres, 173 kilometres, and 157 kilometres West of Port Hardy, respectively. They each had a depth of 10 kilometres.

  • The first to strike was a 4.2 magnitude earthquake, at 10:54 AM.
  • It was followed by a 4.3 magnitude quake at 11:10 AM.
  • The last one was slightly less intense at 4.0 magnitude, and took place at 12:25 PM.

Tremors were not expected to have been felt on Vancouver Island at all, as the earthquake shock waves lose their energy as they move from the ocean plate to the continental plate.
