Human remains found near Lake Cowichan in December identified

Human remains found near Lake Cowichan in December 2017 have been confirmed to be those of Darreld Stanley Rayner.

Rayner was 52-years-old when he went missing in May of 2007. His remains, which were identified by a special investigations team with the B.C. Coroners Service, were located in an area that was steep and secluded near South Shore Road in Lake Cowichan.

Retrieval of the body required a coordinated effort between the BC Coroners Service, Cowichan Search and Rescue and RCMP to recover the remains for recovery and subsequent testing.

Rayner was last seen walking his dog which was located shortly after he was reported missing.

The BC Coroners Service’s investigation is ongoing.
