A man described by police as “in his 30s” has died after being struck by a vehicle at around 10:30 pm last night.

The collision occurred in the southbound lanes on Highway 17 between Mount Newton Cross Road and Island View Road in Central Saanich.

When officers arrived, people at the scene were assisting the victim. He was then taken to Victoria General Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries despite efforts to save him.

Central Saanich Police Investigating

The driver of the vehicle that collided with the pedestrian remained at the scene of the collision and is helping police with their investigation, Central Saanich Police said in a release.

Traffic analysts from the Saanich Police Department assisted the Central Saanich Police in reconstructing the scene.

Southbound traffic on the Pat Bay Highway was diverted several hours early this morning, but reopened at 5:00 am.

The victim’s name was not released.
