The city of Victoria is going to look a little different after this week.
That’s right: the old Johnson Street bridge is being torn down as we speak, and is expected to be completely dismantled by the end of the week.
The Dynamic Beast crane is back in the marine channel (under both bridges) and working away to lift the main span and west span of the old bridge as part of the removal and decommissioning process.
Part of the work was scheduled to be done yesterday, but was postponed due to high winds, so the bridges will also be closed tomorrow while the Beast does its job.
Here we go. The removal of the 1924 Johnson Street Bridge is underway. Reminder, both Johnson Street bridges are closed until 4pm today. #YYJ #YYJTraffic pic.twitter.com/eD4BuMGzq9

In the meantime, traffic is being directed to the Bay Street bridge, so be patient!
The steel from the old Johnson Street bridge will all be recycled as part of the city’s original contract with PCL, according to city of Victoria spokesperson Ryan Shotton.
Both of the Johnson Street bridges are closed until 4 PM today and tomorrow.
