Belmont Secondary School student dies of alleged drug overdose

Share

A grade 10 student at Belmont Secondary School died of a suspected drug overdose over the weekend, according to the Sooke School District.

The student was identified by Principal Jim Lamond in an announcement to the student body, and in a letter to parents and guardians.

Sooke School District Superintendent Jim Cambridge stressed the importance of families discussing the consequences of substance abuse with their children, as these tragic incidents usually occur outside of school hours.

The school has made links and resources available to parents on their website that may help them start the conversation. Students and guardians can also make appointments for in-school counselling sessions by calling the school’s office at 250-478-5501.

Their sources include Island Health and Health Canada:

  3. Talking with teenagers about drugs

This is the second drug-related death among high school students in Victoria this year – on April 20th, Oak Bay High School 11th grader Elliot Eurchuk died at his home after taking street drugs his parents believe he was using to help him sleep.
