Traffic will be closed as final pieces of old Johnson Street Bridge are removed

The new Johnson Street Bridge will be temporarily closed to traffic next week as the remaining pieces of the old bridge are removed.

A Dynamic Beast crane barge will return to Victoria to lift the remaining pieces, the City of Victoria said in a release. The crane barge will be parked south of the new bridge and blocking the marine channel from Friday, June 8 until Sunday, June 10.

There will be a full closure to vehicle, cyclist, and pedestrian traffic across the bridge during non-peak traffic times on Friday between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., though the closures are only expected to last about an hour.

The structure will fully close to traffic on Saturday and Sunday between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. for periods of several hours at a time.

The city says the lifts are weather dependent as the steel pieces cannot be lifted during high winds, so work could be extended if more time is needed.

If you want to get a last look at the old blue bridge, the best view of construction activities will be from the downtown side near Reeson Park, or the Victoria West side at the waterfront walkway near the Delta Ocean Point Hotel.
