Ford Canada recalls nearly 37,000 vehicles that could roll away unexpectedly

Ford Canada is recalling nearly 500,000 vehicles in North America, including 36,887 in Canada, due to concerns that they may roll away unexpectedly.

Ford issued a recall on Wednesday for 2013-16 model year Ford Fusion and 2013-14 Ford Escape vehicles to replace “shifter cable bushings”, which attach the shifter cable to the vehicle’s transmission.

On affected vehicles, the bushing may detach and allow the transmission to be in a gear state different than the driver’s selected gear position. A driver could put their vehicle in park while it actually remains in another gear, unbeknownst to the driver.

Ford says it will replace the shifter cable bushing at no cost to customers. In the meantime, the company says drivers should use their parking brake.

Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries due to faulty cable bushings.

The vehicles affected include:

  • 2014 Ford Fusion vehicles built at Flat Rock Assembly Plant between June 18, 2013 and Sept. 15, 2013
  • 2014-16 Ford Fusion vehicles built at Flat Rock Assembly Plant between June 2, 2014 and Aug. 31, 2015
