The Vancouver Island Metal Festival (VIMF) is back for its second year, and starts with a free show tonight at Centennial Square, starting at 5 p.m.

The set will include Under the Mountain, Buzzard, Dead Quiet, and Anciients, and is presented in part by the Eventide Music Series.

And the heaviness doesn’t stop there as Pyosis kicks off a show at Logan’s Pub at 9 p.m. Shows will continue for the rest of the weekend.

This year’s festival features the return of Vancouver’s Unleash the Archers, an exclusive one-off reunion of Victoria’s Archon Legion, who have been inactive for eight years, and many, many others.

On Saturday afternoon, there will be an all-ages free talk at UVic featuring veteran metal journalist Adem Tepedelen, during which he’ll go into what makes a Hall of Fame album at Decibel magazine.

Unfortunately, the previously announced Sunday evening show at Capital Ballroom featuring Venom Inc. has been cancelled due to issues with the band’s work visa. Other bands on the bill have been incorporated into sets throughout the weekend.
