Batten down the hatches, Vancouver Island!

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for most of the island.

According to the weather agency, a “pair of disturbances” are approaching the south coast of BC and will bring significant amounts of wind and rain, beginning on Thursday.

The weather statement is in effect for the following areas:

  • North Vancouver Island
  • West Vancouver Island
  • East Vancouver Island – Courtenay to Campbell River
  • East Vancouver Island – Nanoose Bay to Fanny Bay
  • Inland Vancouver Island

Rain is forecast to start midday on Thursday for most locations and increase in intensity throughout the evening and continue through Friday before coming to an end early Saturday morning.

Rainfall totals of 30 to 50 mm are expected by Friday morning with additional amounts of 30 to 50 mm possible through Friday night.

Winds are expected to pick up around Vancouver Island and the inner-south coast Thursday afternoon. Coastal areas will be hit with gusts between 40 to 60 km/h at times.

Given the much drier than normal conditions experienced this summer, Environment Canada is warning some drought-stressed trees could be more susceptible to wind damage at lower speeds.
