Police investigating potential new lead in 32-year-old Victoria cold case

Victoria police have a new lead that could help them in solving a 32-year-old cold case of a man who went missing from Victoria.

Dennis Crook was reported missing on October 22, 1985 by friends and had last been seen Oct. 16 of that year.

Now, 32 years later, Victoria Police are hoping that new DNA, photos, and information may help solve the decades old case.

The wealth of new information emerged when a request for a relative’s DNA journeyed across the pond to York, England, Crook’s country of origin.

There, a previously unknown sister of Crook offered to give a blood sample, and provided VicPD with new facts.

In addition to the sister, police also discovered that Crook owned a sailboat, the Beverley Ann, at the time of his disappearance.

The Beverley Ann was a white and blue, 1974 Davidson Crown, and was moored in the Oak Bay Marina for several years.

Crook is described as a Caucasian male, standing 5’ 9”, with a medium to large build. He has dark brown hair, brown eyes, and a thick mustache.

He would be 68 years old now and was 35 when he was reported missing.

“Missing Person Investigators are thanking members of the York community, including the news media, North Yorkshire Police, UK Crime Stoppers, those who are sharing our search information on social media, the University of Nottingham Alumni Association, as well as members of our local Victoria community including our news media, Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers and those sharing our search information locally and with relatives overseas on social media for their assistance in our investigation so far,” said Vic PD in a press release.

“Your efforts are what has progressed our investigation to date.”

Investigators are looking to speak with Dennis Crook’s friends here in Victoria, including those who initially reported his disappearance, or those who knew Dennis.

Anyone with information about Crook or his boat can call 250-995-7654, or contact chantal.ziegler@vicpd.ca. If you would like to remain anonymous you can contact the Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
