The BC NDP party has been fined a total of $4,000 by Elections BC for failing to report four 2017 fundraising events within the given deadline.

The Election Act requires parties to submit the date, time, location and ticket price of any fundraising function to Elections BC at least 7 days prior to the event.

In the following four cases, the NDP failed to file this initial report within the given time frame:

  • $2,000 – Barbecue with Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Bob D’Eith on October 21st. $6,955  was raised at the event.
  • $1,000 – “An Evening with Drinks and Friends” with Municipal Affairs Minister Selina Robinson on October 27th. $5,855 was raised at the event.
  • $500 – “Sparkle and Shine” event with Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Lisa Beare on November 18th. $3,820 was raised at the event.
  • $500 – “A Festive Dinner” with Premier John Horgan on December 3rd in Kelowna. $12,678 was raised at the event.

According to Elections BC, the BC NDP has cooperated fully with their investigation.

“Elections BC determined that the party did not deliberately try to circumvent the Act, and that non-compliance was the result of human error,” reads a report.

The party has also taken additional steps to make sure that no further infractions take place in the future.
