Nanaimo thieves steal over 40 bikes that were to be donated to kids

More than 40 bikes meant to be donated to deserving children were stolen from in Nanaimo.

Sometime between Friday October 5th and Monday October 8th, thieves broke into a warehouse in Central Nanaimo to steal bicycles, leaving two exterior doors broken and a chain link fence cut.

RCMP believe that multiple people and several trucks were involved in carrying out the theft.

The bikes were a part of the Bikes for Kids initiative between the Nanaimo RCMP, Universal Mortgage Architects and local bike shops.

They were donated from the Nanaimo RCMP exhibit storage to Universal Mortgage Architects, who reworked them and donated them to deserving kids and families in the Secret Santa program. Over 100 bikes have been donated in the past 2 years.

“This is a significant loss to the program as these bikes were just weeks away from being given to some real cool deserving youths,” said Cst. Gary O’Brien of Nanaimo RCMP.

If you have information on the whereabouts of the stolen bikes or know who is responsible, call the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345. If you wish to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at www.nanaimocrimestoppers.com or call 1-800-222-8477
