10 places to get a mouth-watering vegetarian meal in Victoria

Times are changing, and so are Canadians’ diets.

A recent study conducted by Dalhousie University revealed that over 6.4 million Canadians follow diets that restrict or eliminate meat, with a further 32% of Canadians thinking of reducing their meat consumption over the next six months.

While there are numerous reasons why Canadians would be steering away from meat, environmental concerns are at the forefront of these recent changes. Meat industries, especially beef, have been found to be detrimental to our quickly deteriorating climate, and many Canadians seem to be responding to a call to action.

Luckily for us, Victoria is the perfect place to make those dietary changes.  From Bastion Square to Royal Oak, we have no shortage of vegan- and vegetarian-friendly options.

In no particular order, here are 10 vegetarian options for you to try in Victoria:

Rebar

Located on the edge of Bastion Square, Rebar is a local favourite for vegetarian fare. It was even featured on Food Network’s You Gotta Eat Here!

Very Good Butchers

Set to be featured on CBC’s Dragons’ Den on November 29th, this Denman Island-born vegetarian “butcher’s” shop opts for butchering beans instead of meat.

Rawthentic Eatery

Rawthentic offers not only vegetarian food but also features entirely raw and organic meals. They also make almond mylk and fresh juices in-house.

FreshCoast Health Food Bar

Located in Shelbourne Plaza, Fresh Coast Health bar makes all their meals from scratch. They have two features — their food bar and their liquid bar (fresh-pressed juices!)

Be Love

Be Love offers a full-service, sit down dinner experience, minus the meat! Not only is their food vegetarian, but it’s also wheat, dairy, and processed sugar-free.

Cafe Bliss

Cafe Bliss claims to have the best sugar-free, wheat-free, dairy-free cake around — and not just in one flavour! There’s six different cakes to choose from. Cafe Bliss doesn’t just serves dessert though:  they also offer juices, smoothies, whole food meals, and more.

Lotus Pond

Love Chinese food, but hate the lack of vegetarian options? Check out Lotus Pond. They offer a full menu of meat-free Chinese cuisine.

Green Cuisine

Located in Market Square, Green Cuisine is an all-you-can-eat style vegan buffet. What more could you ask for?

Venus Sophia Eatery

Venus Sophia features a European-styled tea room experience. Put on your Sunday best and head down for afternoon tea and some vegetarian light bites.

Wild Fire Bakery

Wild Fire bakery aims to serve ethically sourced and environmentally-friendly artisanal baking. They grind their whole grain flour in store, and source all their wheat from Metchosin.
