Elderly Port Alberni woman accidentally hands out medication on Halloween

Families on Halloween were unsure if they were being tricked or treated when they found medication in some of their Kinder Surprise candies.

Port Alberni RCMP received two calls at around 9:52 p.m. and 10:25 p.m. on October 31st, reporting that children in the neighbourhood had been given antibiotic medication in some of their Kinder Surprise eggs.

Parents discovered the misplaced drugs when checking their children’s candy, and called the police right away.

Police identified the house quickly on the 2700 block of 12th Ave, and found that the person responsible was a woman in her 80s who appeared to have diminished mental capacity. The responding officers found that the woman needed medical attention, and helped her to the hospital for treatment.

Besides the medication, the woman had been giving out mittens, scarfs, calculators, and clocks to kids looking for treats.

“Luckily no one was injured or got ill from these medications,” said Cpl. Amelia Hayden of the Port Alberni RCMP.

“Everyone’s safety is our top priority and luckily the parents were able to describe the area and the house where their kids had received the Kinder Surprise eggs. This action allowed us to stop any more from being distributed and got the woman medical assistance.”

If anyone has received one of these unusual candy eggs contact the Port Alberni RCMP at 250-723-2424
