Road construction at Bay and Government St to occur this weekend

Share

Residents of Victoria are no strangers to road construction, and this weekend downtown will see a little bit more than usual.

Earlier today, the City of Victoria released their plans for some weekend road construction, weather permitting. A water main break at the intersection of Bay St. and Government St. is the cause of the repairs, and traffic will be redirected slightly on Saturday and Sunday.

Starting at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, crews will remove and replace the current concrete road base. The concrete will cure overnight, then on Sunday, final road base preparations and paving will occur.

The intersection will remain open, but lane closures and detours will continue throughout Saturday night as the concrete needs time to settle.

Details of lane restrictions/detours at the intersection are:

  • Westbound on Bay St. (towards the Point Ellice Bridge) is down to one thru lane only, and all turns onto Government Street are prohibited
  • Eastbound Bay St. (towards Douglas Street) is being detour, all eastbound traffic is required to turn right onto Government Street (southbound)
  • Southbound Government Street (towards downtown) is reduced to one thru lane only, and all turns onto Bay Street are prohibited
  • Northbound Government Street (towards Gorge Road) remains the same except for left turns onto Bay Street are prohibited

B.C. Transit will also adjust their routes as necessary, and the city suggests that transit users check their local bus stops for route-change information.

If possible, people are advised to use alternate routes over the weekend.
