This part of Fort Street will be closed to traffic for 12 hours on Sunday

If you’re thinking of driving downtown this Sunday, you may want to take this announcement into account while planning your trip.

The 800-block of Fort Street between Blanshard and Quadra will be closed to all vehicle traffic on Sunday, November 25th from 7 a.m. onwards for approximately 12 hours.

This is to make room for a tower crane that needs to be installed at a development site at 840 Fort St. The 6-storey building was once home to a sewing machine retail outlet, and will now contain rental housing units and a commercial space on the ground floor.

The sidewalk and two-way bike lane on the north side of Fort St will also be closed. Pedestrians and cyclists (who will be instructed to dismount) will be directed to the south sidewalk.

Access to businesses and rentals will be maintained for pedestrians. BC Transit buses will also be altering their routes during the closure period; bus stop closures and relocation information is available here.

“Signage and traffic control crews will be on Fort Street for the duration of the work to advise the travelling public about the road closure,” reads a release from the City of Victoria.
