An intense front is expected to make landfall Sunday night, bringing strong winds and heavy rain.

According to Environment Canada, winds are expected to strengthen through the day today and reach up to 80 km/h over exposed coastal areas tonight.

On Saturday, the weather agency issued a special weather statement for all of Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands warning of heavy amounts of rainfall and gusty winds.

According to a statement, rain is expected to begin Sunday night and early Monday morning. Rainfall amounts are uncertain due to the storm’s strong upper-level flow.

Some areas could receive warning level amounts on Monday.

The winds could lead to delays or cancellations to BC Ferries sailings and widespread power outages.

“High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break,” reads the weather warning. “Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions due to high winds.”

Winds will ease Monday morning off the west coast of Vancouver Island and by Wednesday afternoon for the inner south coast.
