City of Victoria seeking public input on 2019 draft budget

Don’t miss your chance to make your voice heard and to help shape the future of the province’s capital city.

According to an announcement made Thursday, the municipal government is seeking the public’s input on Victoria’s 2019 draft budget, and the 2019 – 2022 draft strategic plan.

Victoria’s operating budget for 2019 totals at $244.7 million while the capital budget comes in at $118 million.

The city website highlights some critical projects that must be addressed by next year’s budget — like replacing aging pipes and underground infrastructure (the oldest pipes were installed back in 1891) — but your ideas can communicate which direction Victoria should take in the future.

How to participate

There will be two opportunities to meet with city staff in January to discuss the 2019 draft budget and longer term draft strategic plan.

The first event, Budget Town Hall, is on January 16th, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. Members of the public are invited to come to Victoria City Hall during this time to ask questions and give feedback on the proposed budget. Viewers at home can also watch a live webcast of the meeting from home.

The second event, the Strategic Plan Engagement Summit, is on January 19th and begins at 10:00 a.m. At this meeting, Victorians can take a deep dive into the city’s proposed strategic plan, and help shape the city’s future over the next four years.

There’s also an online survey is available for anyone who wants to send in ideas available until January 20th, 2019.

City council has already given preliminary approval to the draft 2019 financial plan, but changes could be made to it following this period of public input. The budget will be finalized in early February of next year.
