Impaired driver hands VicPD officers a hamburger instead of a driver’s license

Victoria police just never know what to expect when they’re conducting a roadblock and one driver proved just that on Friday night.

Just before midnight, an intoxicated driver arrived at a roadblock and attempted to hand an officer a burger instead of his drivers’ licence.

While on the humorous side, police did say the driver nearly struck an officer and reserve constable as he approached.

Police said the man was so impaired he could not provide a sample for impairment testing.

Two more drivers were also taken off the road following this incident.

Earlier this month, a province-wide initiative kicked off to stop impaired drivers this holiday season.

The ‘Holiday CounterAttack‘ project is coordinated by the B.C. government, local police units, and ICBC, and features an increased number of road checks set up across the province, and started Saturday, December 1st.

On Vancouver Island, this includes a coordinated effort by the Island District Traffic Services’ ‘Light up the Highway’ initiative, through which planned check-stops will run the length of the island.

Officers will be using standardized field sobriety testing and specially trained drug recognition experts at these stops, and will also be enforcing impaired driving laws in accordance with the recently imposed cannabis legislation.
