Earlier today, we reported on the death of a man who was recovered from the water near Johnson Street Bridge.

In a press release this afternoon, Victoria Police confirmed that the individual in question was intoxicated, and fell off the bridge after climbing onto a railing and losing his balance.

Several officers attended the scene including the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, but were unable to revive him.

A Canadian Coast Guard boat was dispatched to recover the body. “Our thoughts are with the man’s family during this difficult time,” reads the statement from police.

Andy Watson, manager of communications at BC Coroner’s Service told Victoria Buzz that the case is now under investigation.

“I can confirm the Coroners Service is in the early stages of our investigation involving a male in his 50s,” said Watson.

“Due to the privacy of the deceased, per the Coroners Act and provincial privacy legislation, we will not be confirming or releasing identity.”
