One of Canada’s most recognized icons, Ryan Reynolds, will be narrating a new IMAX documentary, the Great Bear Rainforest.

The film showcases the wildlife of BC’s rugged and beautiful coastline, and takes place in the North/Central Coast regions of the mainland, as well as south Moresby Island and north Vancouver Island.

According to the filmmakers, our backyard has been “unchanged for 10,000 years”, and that BC’s Great Bear Rainforest is “the last intact temperate rainforest in the world.”

The area is home to grizzlies, coastal wolves, large sea otters, and the rarest bear on earth – the spirit bear.

Spirit bears are a subspecies of the North American black bear that have white fur due to a rare genetic trait. The alabaster bears are only found in BC’s Great Bear Rainforest, with an estimated 50 – 100 living in the wild.

Inspiration

“I want my children to know there is still an area in this world that has remained wild, and will remain that way, because of the long history of stewardship shown by indigenous people,” said Reynolds in a statement.

“I hope this film inspires the younger generation that there is hope for the future if we all work together and take care of our planet’s remaining wild places.”

Besides the narration of Ryan Reynolds, the film will feature another Hollywood powerhouse, Academy Award winning Hans Zimmer, who is creating and directing the score.

“When I saw the footage of their film I could not help but be swept away by the spellbinding imagery of this truly remarkable place,” said Zimmer in the same release.

“I was so moved by the beauty and grandness of this environment that I felt compelled to be involved on a deeper level and I am excited to be a part of the team.”

The film will first be available in 4 Canadian markets — one of which is Victoria — before expanding to theatres across the country. It will premiere at the Victoria IMAX in the Royal BC Museum on February 15th, 2019.
