The Esquimalt Lagoon polar bear swim is returning this year

Share

2019, here we come!

For just the second time ever, Victoria Sports News is hosting a New Year’s Day Polar Bear Swim at Esquimalt Lagoon!

The frigid swim is open to everyone, especially the brave, the adventurous, or those who just want to support kids in Victoria.

This newly created annual event will have prizes for swimmers – including one for the first person in the water – and will donate proceeds to KidSport Greater Victoria.

Registration for the event requires a $5 ticket, the proceeds of which will go to KidSport Greater Victoria, a community based sport charity.

For those who want to ring in the new year in style, a $30 ticket is also available that comes with a commemorative shirt, hot drinks, and access to heated shelters.

“What a fun and symbolic way to wash away the previous year and to celebrate the new one, with a dip in the ocean on New Year’s Day at noon, with a whole bunch of like-minded people.” reads the Facebook event page.

The Victoria HarbourCats and Synergy Health Management are returning this year as sponsors.

The first ceremonial dive will be done by a fully uniformed Victoria HarbourCats baseball player.
