Victoria police on the lookout for impaired drivers tonight

Share

New Year’s Eve is here, and it’s time to celebrate!

Just don’t forget to be smart tonight, and to find a safe way home.

The Victoria Police department issued a news released today reminding holiday revelers to avoid driving while impaired.

According to VicPD, between Dec. 1st and Dec. 24th, officers took 42 impaired drivers off of Victoria’s roads. On Saturday, police also issued one 90-day immediate roadside prohibition.

“That figure amounts to nearly two impaired drivers each day,” says VicPD.

“… the numbers of impaired drivers on our roads is far too high.”

On Sunday night, an alleged impaired driver was seen hitting a road median and tree before ending up on the sidewalk in the Saanich area.

Victoria police recommend several alternatives for celebrators tonight, like taxis, dial-a-driver services, a designated driver, or BC Transit.

BC Transit buses will be free tonight starting at 6 p.m. until the end of service.

VicPD notes that if you’re truly desperate, the cost of calling a towing company and having your vehicle towed home is less expensive than the fine for a single 24 hour immediate roadside prohibition.

Have fun and stay safe tonight, Victoria!
