A 41-year-old man has been arrested and charged following a non-violent bank robbery in Nanaimo on Saturday.

Police say that the man entered a CIBC branch in Port Place Mall around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday armed with a note that said he was holding a gun.

He then gave the note to a bank teller, who handed over an undisclosed amount of cash to the man, and then exited the bank.

Police say that no weapon was seen or produced, and that no employees were injured during the robbery.

Bank surveillance footage shows that the man arrived and departed in a waiting taxi.

“Within two hours, officers were able to track the suspect male to a residence on Wesley Street,” said Nanaimo RCMP in a release.

Once there, officers arrested the suspect without incident, and recovered the majority of the stolen money.

David Scott Mcaree of no fixed address has been charged with one count of robbery, and is currently being held in custody.

He is scheduled to appear in Nanaimo Provincial Court on January 15th.
