The island’s first baby of 2019 was born 42 minutes after the stroke of midnight, according to Island Health.

Little baby Maverick was born to parents Halie Gialson and Shane Hardie of Shawnigan Lake, and was also welcomed by his five-year-old sister Madison.

He was born at Victoria General Hospital and weighed a ripe 7 pounds, 12 ounces.

“We are so happy to welcome our baby boy Maverick to our family, big sister Madison is over the moon to have him here,” Halie told Victoria Buzz.

“We would like to thank all the nurses, doctors and staff at VGH for their help and support.”

“We are home now adjusting to our new ‘normal’ and loving every minute of it!”

Island Health says Maverick felt the “need for speed”, arriving eight days before his due date.

But only time will tell if he makes a best friend named Goose.
