Boil water advisory in place for several Langford residents after water main break on Tuesday night

A water main break in Langford left residents of 11 homes and one condo soaked in water on Tuesday night, and has resulted in a boil water advisory that will remain in place for several days.

The Capital Regional District issued a Public Service Announcement early Wednesday morning letting people know that the flooding was caused by an eight inch water distribution pipe that burst at the corner of Goldstream Avenue and Strathmore Road.

The incident occurred at about 8 p.m. on Tuesday night and the occupants of the affected homes had to be evacuated.

Crews have been working to repair the rupture since early Wednesday morning and have thus far fixed a hole in the pavement and opened single lane traffic.

The situation last night was far more dire, as water flooded the street, submerging vehicles including a Ford pick-up truck that was seen with its rear wheels stuck under the water.

Island Health issued a boil water advisory for the affected area after authorities took water samples and are now awaiting results, which could take several days.

“Because of how long it takes to get those results back, this isn’t a matter of hours, it’s a matter of days,” said Matthew McCrank, Senior Manager of  Infrastructure Operations at CRD Integrated Water Services.

Homeowners in the affected region should boil their household tap water vigorously for a minute to make sure it is safe to drink. The advisory will be lifted once test results confirm that the tap water is potable again.
