During Tuesday’s island-wide snow day, Victoria resident Kelly Somogyi decided to organize a snowball fight that was open to everyone down at the Legislature.

At first, Kelly imagined only a few dozen people would attend, but as word of the event quickly spread, it snowballed into something more.

At the snowball fight

Today, one snowball fight attendee estimates that there were 500 people of all ages down at the legislature.

Victoria resident Bev Ardley was curled up at home when she saw the Facebook event for the snowball fight. “As a young 60 plus I thought ‘what the heck,’” she told Victoria Buzz. She then put on some warm winter gear and caught a bus from Willows Beach to downtown.

“The bus driver thought I was nuts,” she said.

At the snowball fight, Bev estimates that there were roughly 500 people on the lawns of the Legislature. She said that while most of the attendees looked 25 – 35 years old, there was “a mix of all ages” having fun in the snow.

“Me and a few ‘smarter people’ stood back and watched the fun,” she said. “Even the police on the grounds participated.”

Victoria’s rare dumping of snow brought smiles to everyone at the gathering, and Bev does not recall anyone being injured as the snowballs were being tossed.

“It was just some good honest fun and [I am] glad I got off the couch,” she said.

“I even got the same bus driver home who wanted to hear all about it.”
