A trio of “intentionally set” fires that erupted over the weekend is under investigation by Saanich Police.

The series of fires took place between Friday evening and the early hours of Saturday morning.

The first fire was set just outside of the Staples on Tolmie Avenue at roughly 9 p.m. As the flames began to grow, a woman passing by noticed the fire and alerted emergency services and the staff at Staples. Fortunately, the staff at the office supply store managed to extinguish the fire quickly before any damage to the building could be caused.

A few short hours later, at approximately 4 a.m. on Saturday, two more fires were set in dumpsters nearby.

One blaze was started behind the Save-On-Foods on Blanshard Street, and the other was set across the street at 894 Vernon Street.

Both fires were put out by Saanich Fire, resulting in damage to the dumpsters but fortunately not to the surrounding areas.

Investigators are asking for anyone with information on the fires to contact Saanich Police at 250-475-4321 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
